Friday Prep Football and Basketball Preview: Ferriday attempts to win rematch
Published 12:01 am Friday, December 6, 2019
Ferriday High Trojans will be out for revenge when they try and win their eighth straight home game tonight in the Class 2A Louisiana High School Athletics Association semi-final round.
The Trojans face the Amite High Warriors — the team that beat Ferriday last year and kept the Trojans from playing in the New Orleans Superdome for a state championship.
The last time the Trojans lost a home playoff game was in the 2017 LHSAA Class 2A playoffs. St. Helena College & Career Academy Hawks won 12-6 over the Trojans that year. The loss was in the semifinal round, something that has become a trend for Ferriday. In the past two seasons, Ferriday has had its championship dreams dashed in the semifinal round. After losing in 2017, the Trojans again missed going to the Superdome in 2018 when Amite High beat Ferriday 44-20.
Since the semifinal round loss in the 2017 season, the Trojans have not lost a home game at Melz Field, with a record of 5-0 in the playoffs at home. Ferriday hopes to continue its home playoff streak against Amite High tonight.
One of the players the Trojans need to stop is Corey McKnight for the Warriors. In the Warriors’ 26-0 win over Loreauville High, McKnight ran for three touchdowns. The longest touchdown run was 59 yards.
Kickoff for the LHSAA Class 2A semifinal round is at 7 p.m. Friday at Melz Field.
Besides football, there are boys’ basketball tournaments finishing up and four basketball games.
