FERRIDAY — The No. 1 Ferriday High Trojans are on a mission to win against No. 16 Port Allen Pelicans and win the Class 2A championship.
In preparation for tonight’s second round game of the Louisiana High School Athletics Association Class 2A playoffs, Trojans Head Coach Stanley Smith said at practices this week the Trojans have focused on cleaning up mistakes made in the 56-0 win over Vinton High Lions in the first round.
“We had a lot of penalties,” Smith said. “We have been emphasizing doing what’s right and cleaning up our mistakes. In this time of the season, if you do anything wrong in a critical situation, then it could hurt you.”
The Trojans (10-1) have been on a 10-game winning streak since losing the first game of the season 35-22 to Alexandria High School.
Tonight is the second home game of the LHSAA Class 2A playoffs. At Melz Field this season, the Trojans have a perfect record of 6-0.
“We have a home field advantage by having a big home crowd,” Roosevelt Davis III, said. “When any opponent comes to our field, we have to shut them down.”
Davis plays on the offensive line for the Trojans. Smith said the offensive line is a key ingredient to the Trojans’ success.
“The last couple of years it has been our weak point,” Smith said. “I think this year it’s one of our biggest assets. The biggest thing is to make sure they’re locked in so they can carry out their assignments. They have been doing a good job of that.”
In the first-round game against the Lions, the Trojans had contributions from multiple players. For the last two games of the season, Blake Tarver has contributed for the Trojans in scoring touchdowns. Tarver said he plays hard and is a major part of both the offense and defense.
The Pelicans (5-6) come into tonight’s game after earning a 29-6 win over the Rayville High Hornets in the first round. Smith said the Pelicans run a three-man front on offense and the Pelicans like to run the ball.
Kickoff for today’s game is at 7 p.m. at Melz Field.
