FERRIDAY — The Delta Charter Storm have one plan on Friday: another upset victory.
Friday night, the No. 19 seed Storm won 42-38 over the No. 14 seed of Plain Dealing High Lions in the Class 1A first round of the Louisiana High School Athletics Association playoffs. This is the first time the Storm have advanced past the first round since 2016.
In 2016, the the Delta Charter squad won 28-26 in the first round to Homer High. Then in the second round, Kentwood High won 46-0 over Delta Charter.
Storm Head Coach Blake Wheeler said it’s exciting to be this far in the LHSAA playoffs.
“It’s a good experience for our kids and I’m glad our seniors got a playoff win,” Wheeler said. “Hopefully we will be able to pick up another playoff win.”
One of the players who stood out for the Storm was Kavarius Whitehead. Wheeler said Whitehead did a good job on converting third and fourth downs, keeping drives alive and running the ball effectively.
In last week’s game against the Lions, Whitehead obtained 20 carries, ran for 90 yards and four rushing touchdowns. He also ran for two two-point conversions and passed for one two-point conversion. Whitehead said running for four touchdowns felt good.
“It was my first time doing that this year,” Whitehead said. “It felt good to accomplish something like that.”
The Storm’s next opponent is the No. 3 seed White Castle High Bulldogs. The (6-3) Bulldogs come off a bye week.
To prepare for the Bulldogs, Wheeler said the Storm on offense are focusing on better pass protection. Wheeler added White Castle is a pressure-oriented team. On defense, the Storm are focusing on having a sound coverage and having players in position to make plays.
In practices this week, Whitehead said he’s trying to make sure the offensive line is blocking good and doing their job.
“It always is key to have good blocking,” Whitehead said. “If they’re blocking right, then they would open up holes for us.”
The Storm (4-7) will travel 125 miles south for the game at 7 p.m. Friday at White Castle High School.
