MONTEREY — In the Monterey High School Library on Friday, Jacob Spinks signed his letter of intent to play baseball at Copiah-Lincoln Community College.
Spinks started playing baseball when he was 3 to 4 years old. He said baseball is a sport he has always had fun playing.
“You just play, and you don’t have to think about anything else,” Spinks said. “You just go out there and have fun.”
When Spinks was 11 years old, he hit his first home run in Dixie Youth Baseball.
Spinks said his plan is to play two years at Copiah-Lincoln Community College for two years and then transfer to play at a four-year university.
“This was a good decision for me because coming from a small school the competition is not that great,” Spinks said. “I felt like I should develop more and Co-Lin does that really good.”
Monterey High Head Baseball Coach Patrick Wells was also on hand at Friday’s signing. Wells said it’s a big deal to have someone sign to play a collegiate sport.
“Every boy who plays any sport in general, you ask them what they want to do or be when they grow up,” Wells said. “Whatever they say they want to play professional sports. It’s a dream come true for him. It’s another step in the goals he has set for himself.”
Jake Barlow is an alumnus from Monterey High who is playing collegiate baseball at Delta State. Spinks said it’s a great opportunity to play baseball in college because not many have the opportunity like he does.
On the Wolves’ roster for the upcoming baseball season, Wells said he has a handful of seniors and eight juniors.
“Spinks has been a big asset to the team,” Wells said. “There are good athletes who have good athleticism but not all of them have the work ethic that Spinks has. What I was proud of I don’t have to go and tell him he needs to hit in the cage, do this and that. He goes and does it. That’s the difference between someone who wants to play after high school. It’s his work ethic.”
