Jefferson County beat Wilkinson County 50-14

FAYETTE — In front of a Thursday night homecoming crowd, Jefferson County High School Tigers won 50-14 against Wilkinson County High School Wildcats.

The Tigers picked up their second win against another Mississippi High School Athletic Association Region 7-3A opponent.

The game was close in the first quarter with the score 8-6 in favor of the Tigers. The Wildcats scored on a 26-yard pass from Freddie Byrd to Devonta Evans.

But in the second quarter is where the Tigers offense came alive. The Tigers scored three touchdowns in the quarter and converted three two-point conversations. Tigers running back Jaheime Herrington ran for two rushing touchdowns. The first rushing touchdown was for 10-yards while the second was for 9-yards.

Tigers quarterback Marquise Smith ran for a 10-yard touchdown as well. The Tigers led at halftime, 30-14.

In the third quarter, the Tigers recovered a fumble recovery for one-yard with 9:07 left.

Then, with 3:33 left in the third quarter, Smith threw a pass to Kendrick January Jr. January ran the ball for 90-yards for his first touchdown in the game.

Jefferson County scored seven touchdowns in the game while Wilkinson County scored two touchdowns.

In total, JCHS obtained 247 rushing yards and 160 passing yards. The Tigers combined for 507 total yards on offense.

Jefferson County (4-4, 2-0 MHSAA Region 7-3A) has a bye week on Oct. 14.

Wilkinson County (2-6, 1-1 MHSAA Region 7-3A) will host Hazelhurst High School on Oct. 14.
