NATCHEZ — On Friday night, nine Cathedral Green Wave football seniors of the Class of 2020 were recognized, along with cancer survivors as the team defeated the Clinton Christian Academy Warriors 57-36.
In the game, the Green Wave and the Warriors combined for 14 touchdowns.
J.T. Taylor threw four of his five touchdown passes to fellow seniors Ben White and Parker Murray.
“It was special to be able to do it on Senior Night and watch it all come together,” Taylor said about his performance in the game.
White scored four passing touchdowns and intercepted the football on defense. Murray was the second Green Wave player who intercepted the ball.
“I wasn’t really thinking about it much. It was a special game,” White said. “I just wanted to do the best I can for the people here and the people I honored on the back of my jersey.”
Eight of the nine touchdowns for the Green Wave were scored by seniors. Harris scored two rushing touchdowns, one of those for 42 yards.
“So proud of the seniors,” Cathedral Head Coach Chuck Darbonne said about the seniors’ performance. “All nine of them were all represented the whole game. They stepped up where ever we needed them. There were some good contributions on the field.”
After the Green Wave took a 12-0 lead with 9:49 in the second quarter, the Warriors scored on the kickoff return on a lateral play.
Darbonne said the Warriors set up the lateral play pretty good.
After the Green Wave went three-and-out with 7:34 left in the second quarter, Keiwon Rodgers led the Warriors’ drive 38 yards.
Rodgers scored on a 32-yard rushing touchdown.
In the third quarter with 4:52 left, the Warriors’ Teano Watts caught a pass from quarterback Dylan Mitchell. Watts tackled, hit onto the ground and the crown of his helmet hit the grass. Watts was conscious when he was carried off on a stretcher and transferred via ambulance to Merit Health in Natchez. The injury appeared not to be too serious.
The Green Wave (4-3) will travel to Centreville Academy on Friday, Oct. 11.
