BROOKHAVEN — It was a rough late Tuesday afternoon both at the plate and on the mound for the Cathedral High School Lady Green Wave as they lost to the Brookhaven Academy Lady Cougars 12-1 in four innings in an MAIS District 4-4A game.

Cathedral took a four-game winning streak into this district match-up. And while a win over Brookhaven Academy would have been good to keep the momentum going, the Lady Green Wave would still be the No. 4 seed out of District 4 for the upcoming Class 4A South State Tournament.

But any thoughts of an upset ended quickly when, with a runner on base, Abby Grace Richardson took a 3-2 pitch from starting pitcher Madeline Smith over the fence for a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning. The Lady Cougars added to their lead with four runs in the bottom of the second with Richardson, Bailee Goodson, Reagan Newman, and Madi Smith each driving in a run.

The Lady Green Wave scored their only run in the top of the third inning when Hailey Ellis singled and scored on an RBI double by Allie Feltus. That made it a 6-1 game, but the visitors would get no closer.

For winning pitcher Emily Claire Felder, that was the only bump in the road in an otherwise stellar performance on the mound. Felder pitched all four innings, holding Cathedral to just three hits while striking out eight and walking none.

The Lady Cougars scored two runs in the bottom of the third to go ahead 8-1. Anna Poole came on in relief of Madeline Smith and gave up four runs on four hits and two walks in the bottom of the fourth.

Madeline Smith took the loss after she gave up eight runs, seven of them earned, on nine hits and five walks with just one strikeout in three innings. Poole lasted just two-thirds of an inning. Fisher Iseminger had the other base hit for the Lady Green Wave.

Richardson went 3-for-4 with the homer, a double, three RBIs and three runs scored while Felder helped her own cause by going 2-for-2 with a double, one RBI and one run scored for the Lady Cougars.

Cathedral (11-14, 3-5) was scheduled to host Franklin Academy today with the junior varsity game at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity game at 6:15 p.m., but those games have been cancelled.

The Lady Green Wave will next play at the Class 4A South State Tournament at the Magee Sports Complex in Magee against District 3 No. 1 seed Hartfield Academy. Simpson Academy is the host school for this double-elimination tournament.

Cathedral 5,

Prairie View Academy 4 (Monday)

BASTROP, La. — Lauren Dunbar’s solo home run in the top of the fifth inning wound up proving to be the difference as the Cathedral High School Lady Green Wave held on for a 5-4 win over the Prairie View Academy Lady Spartans Monday afternoon.

Dunbar’s homer gave Cathedral a 5-1 lead, but Prairie View tried to mount a comeback in the final two innings. An RBI single by Morgan and an RBI fielder’s choice by Hawthorne made it a 5-3 game in the bottom of the sixth inning. Then an RBI double by Hobson cut Cathedral’s lead to just one run. But winning pitcher Madeline Smith was able to get the final two outs to preserve the win.

The Lady Green Wave scored three runs in the top of the second inning, two of them on an error, and added another run in the top of the third for a 4-0 lead. The Lady Spartans got on the scoreboard with one run in the bottom of the fourth.

Smith allowed four runs, three of them earned, on five hits with four strikeouts and two walks in a complete-game performance to pick up the win. Dunbar went 3-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored. Anna Poole had a double and scored one run. Haliegh Nunnery had two RBIs.

Hawthorne was charged with the loss as she went all seven innings and gave up five runs, only one of them earned, on eight hits with one strikeout and none walks. Madelynn Crymes was 2-for-3 with one run scored.
