NATCHEZ — Services for Arthur James Hurts Sr., 80, of Natchez, who died Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2019, at Merit Health Natchez, will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Bright Star Baptist Church in Natchez.
Burial will follow beside his wife, Gertrude Hurts, at the Natchez National Cemetery with military honors under the direction of Concordia Funeral Home in Ferriday.
Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Mr. Hurts was born Sept. 18, 1938, in Goudeau, Louisiana, the son of L.G. and Ophelia Wycoff Hurts.
He was a U.S. Army veteran and a retired math teacher for the Wilkinson County Public School System.
Mr. Hurts was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; three sisters, Helen Coleman, Vera Lee Steward and Jerry Lean Hurts; one brother, Rubel Hurts; and one nephew, Lawrence Steward.
Survivors include one sister, Rosa Jackson of Port Arthur, Texas; four children, Darryl Hurts Sr., Denise Hurts, Arthur Hurts Jr. and Kermit Hurts; a special niece, Rose Mitchell; Shawn Knight who was raised as a daughter, all of Natchez; 14 beloved grandchildren, LaTaija Hurts, Voncita Hurts, Brandy Bruce, Kermishala Hurts, Tylon Hurts, Jayln, Natia Jones, Orianna Banks, Tylisha Jenkins, Ashanti McKnight, Keidric Winding, Darryl Hurts Jr., Darnell Stevenson and Gene A. Jones Jr.; nine great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces, nephews, cousins and his former students.
