NATCHEZ— Services for Charlotte Catherine Confer King, 96, of Natchez, who died Sunday, Aug. 11, 2019, at River Bridge Specialty Hospital in Vidalia, will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Zion Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church with the Rev. Birdon Mitchell officiating.
Burial will be 10 a.m. Monday at the Natchez National Cemetery under the direction of West Gate Funeral Home.
Visitation will be from 4:15 to 5:15 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and from 10 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church.
Mrs. King was born Sept. 25, 1922, in Natchez, the daughter of Bismark Confer and Lucille Henderson Confer.
Charlotte was the first African- American registered nurse employed by International Paper Company in 1973. She was a member of Zion Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church for a number of years where she served faithfully until her health failed. She was also a member of Eliza Pillars Nurses Association and the Elks Social Club. She enjoyed watching NBA basketball, track and field, gymnastics and competitive swimming.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harrison King Jr.; her parents; one daughter, Diane Powers; two brothers, James and Albert Confer; and two granddaughters, Deven Powers and Lauren King.
Survivors include two sons, Harrison L. King III and wife, Ella, of Natchez and Albert C. King and wife, Adrienne, of Sacramento, California; two daughters, Donna Conner of Natchez and Denise Davis of Lake Charles, Louisiana; one niece; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a number of other relatives and friends.
