Time to update Adams County election system

Mississippi’s primary elections were held Tuesday.
Today, five days later, voters and candidates in Adams County are still awaiting the official results of those elections.
Meanwhile, most of the state knew the results of their counties’ elections days ago.
On Friday, members of the Democratic and Republican parties of Adams County, along with members of the Adams County election commission worked to hand-count hundreds of absentee and affidavit ballots that could not be scanned into Adams County’s outdated election equipment.
With 15 local county races and some 50 candidates vying for the positions, not to mention statewide and district-wide races on those same ballots, a lot of candidates are anxiously awaiting the results to know if they made it to a runoff or if they won outright.
Meanwhile, Adams County votes in statewide and district-wide elections have not yet been officially added to those total results, many of which, were called and decided days ago.
Adams County election commission members said our votes will not be certified until Monday.
Could you imagine if an important race such as the Republican primary race for governor hung on a couple of hundred votes — think Bush v. Gore — and all the eyes of the state were upon Adams County with its antiquated election system?
Considering all of those issues, it is time for Adams County to invest in new election equipment.
It is past time for someone in the proper position to do something to get the ball rolling toward updating our county’s election equipment.
We realize it is too late to do anything before the Aug. 27 runoff or even the Nov. 5 general election, but we do have city elections and even a presidential election coming up in 2020.
We hope our system is updated before then.
