NATCHEZ — Madeline Smith, Anna Poole, and Lily Crum combined to pitch a one-hitter with nine total strikeouts while Kinslee Young had a big performance at the plate as the Cathedral Lady Green Wave defeated the Wilkinson County Christian Academy Lady Rams 11-1 in five innings Monday afternoon.
Smith was the winning pitcher after pitching no-hit ball over the first two innings with five strikeouts and two walks. And she got all the run support she needed in the bottom of the first inning, when Cathedral struck for six runs.
Poole came in and pitched third and fourth innings, allowing one hit, walking one batter, and striking out three batters. That one hit was a single by Kylie Bolden.
The Lady Green Wave added to its lead with three runs in the bottom of the third inning and two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to go up 11-0 to put WCCA on the verge of being run-ruled.
Crum entered for the top of the fifth inning. She allowed one unearned run on no hits and one walk with one strikeout. Ava Randall walked and later scored for the Lady Rams, but they were unable to keep the game going.
Young went 3-for-3 with three runs batted in and scored one run. Lauren Dunbar was 2-for-3 with one RBI to lead the Lady Green Wave at the plate.
Randall had a rough outing on the mound, allowing 11 runs, six of them earned, one nine hits, four walks, and one hit batter to go with four strikeouts in four innings.
WCCA (0-3) plays host to Amite School Center today at 6 p.m. Cathedral (1-1) hosts Porter’s Chapel Academy today at 6:15 p.m., which follows the junior varsity game that starts at 5 p.m.
Centreville Academy 14, ACCS 5
NATCHEZ — Amanda Newman overcame six walks by holding Adams County Christian School to just four hits and she proved to be a tough out at the plate as the Centreville Academy Lady Tigers rolled to a 14-5 win over the Lady Rebels Monday night.
Newman went 5 1/3 innings and gave up five runs, two of them earned, struck out four batters, and hit one batter. She also went 2-for-3 with a double, a home run, three runs batted in, and three runs scored.
Centreville jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning and added another run in the top of the second before ACCS bounced back with two runs of its own in the bottom of the second to make it a 3-2 game.
That would be as close as the Lady Rebels would get the rest of the way in their season-opener.
The Lady Tigers struck for three runs in the top of the third inning and two runs in the top of the fourth for an 8-2 advantage. ACCS tried to stay within striking distance, and by the time the sixth inning was over, it trailed Centreville 9-5.
But any chance of a Lady Rebels comeback was thwarted when the Lady Tigers scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning.
Lana Dalton came on in relief of Newman and pitched one-hit ball with five strikeouts and two walks in 1 2/3 innings.
Emilea Roberts was 2-for-4 with a double, three RBIs, and two runs scored. Newman and Roberts were two of five players for Centreville who had two base hits.
Becca Cowan went all seven innings for ACCS, allowing 14 runs, six of them earned, on 12 hits and three hit batters to go with 10 strikeouts. The defense behind her did not help as the Lady Rebels committed nine errors.
The Lady Rebels were led at the plate by Heidi Zimmerman, who went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
Centreville (2-3) next plays at Brookhaven Academy Friday at 6:15 p.m., which follows the JV game at 5 p.m. ACCS (0-1) hosts Bowling Green School today at 7:30 p.m. The JV game starts at 6 p.m.
