VIDALIA — George Davis spends a lot of time sitting on the side of the road and he couldn’t be happier.

When The Dart landed on Carter Street in Vidalia Sunday, Davis was waiting to sell some of his summer produce.

“I’m not doing this because I have to, I do it because I enjoy it,” Davis said sitting next to his produce stand. Davis also known as “Peter Rabbit” retired from Armstrong Tire and Rubber after 25 years and has spent his retirement traveling the country and selling vegetables.

“It’s better than smoking dope and stealing isn’t it,” Davis said, “I’m not ashamed of my game.”

Davis said he enjoys selling produce in Vidalia.

“People in Vidalia treat me real good,” Davis said, “They look back at what you have done and what you are doing right now.”

Davis said he has traveled through New York, Alabama, Louisiana, Arkansas, Texas, all through the night and day by himself selling tomatoes, watermelon, crawfish and okra.

“I’ve seen all over the country,” Davis said, “I know all the watermelon growers in Texas, Arkansas, Florida and all over.”

But when it comes down to it, Davis said selling produce is much more than making money.

“I like being out here in the fresh air, the hot sun, the rain, the storm. God takes care of me,” Davis said, “You can’t buy all that, and I won’t sell it to you.”
