NATCHEZ — A Natchez man was found guilty Nov. 30 of aggravated assault and is set for sentencing Dec. 17, an attorney said.

Sami Kaleva Kivinen was arrested Nov. 28, 2017 and charged with assault with a deadly weapon. The assault occurred in the early morning hours of Oct. 23, 2017, at the Under-the-Hill Saloon.

At the time, Natchez Police Chief Walter Armstrong said the assault arose from an altercation between Kivinen and another patron.

Prosecuting Attorney Tim Cotton said Kivinen’s actions showed his intent to harm the other bar patron.

“He left after being put in a cab by the bartender,” Cotton said. “He left and returned an hour-and-a-half later with his son and a baseball bat and a gun.”

Armstrong said Kivinen then proceeded to strike the man over the head with the bat outside of the bar. Cotton said the victim did not sustain any long-term injuries.

Cotton said he was satisfied with the outcome.

“It’s justice for the victim and a very good job of law enforcement from working the case,” Cotton said.
