SICILY ISLAND — The Sicily Island High School Tigers will look to extend their winning streak to three games, but it will not be easy when they travel to Monroe, Louisiana, to take on the Ouachita Christian School Eagles in the LHSAA District 2-1A opener for both teams.
Kickoff will be at 7 p.m. Friday. Both teams are 2-1 overall, but each team took separate paths last week to get there. Sicily Island needed a late touchdown to win at LaSalle High School 12-6 while Ouachita Christian took care of Delhi Charter School 41-12.
Despite holding LaSalle to just six points, Sicily Island head coach Donald Money felt like his team could have played better on both sides of the ball.
“As soon as we got off the bus, we came out flat. We had linemen that were not doing their assignments. They played lot stiffer defense in the second half,” Money said. “We changed our offense a little bit at halftime, too. It helped us.”
In preparing for Ouachita Christian, Money said he and his coaching staff have been making some adjustments in practice to “clean up some of the problems we had in the first half at LaSalle.”
He added, “Some of the techniques were not what they were trained to do. They weren’t executing. The defensive line has to have a good game or it could be a long night for us. Offensively, we have to carry our blocking assignments better. We had a few miscues. We had a few bad snaps and a few blocks in the back.”
Money noted that experience could be the x-factor in the outcome of this game.
“We’re basically a young team. We only have two seniors. We’re playing with less experienced players. They’ve got a lot of juniors and seniors. We have a few juniors, but we have more underclassmen,” Money said.
As for what concerns him the most about the Eagles, Money said, “They’re a strong team. I feel like they’re a bigger team than LaSalle. Faster than LaSalle. They have a well-coached team.”
The Eagles will use several different formations on offense throughout the game, Money said, like they did last year when the won at Sicily Island 54-28.
“The run a shotgun formation with backs on each side of the quarter. They run a two-wide set. Sometimes they’ll have two receivers on each side,” Money said. “They’ll change that up and have three receivers on one side and one on the other. They run jet sweep motions. They run dive plays. They’re going to be tough.”
Then he added, “We’re hoping to be able to compete with them. We’re going to give it a shot.”
In addition to defensive linemen Xavier Ramirex, Ricky Tolliver Jr., Jamonte Jordan, Jimmy Parker, and Montrell Jackson, Money said that linebackers Tyreke Tolliver, Jonavian Tolliver, John Polk, and Keonte Dunbar, cornerbacks Landrae James and Maurice Humphries, and safety Tyrell Jordan will have to have big games on that side of the ball for his team to upset Ouachita Christian.
“Offensively, we’re hoping Tyreke has a good game throwing the ball and running the ball. Our receivers, Keonte Dunbar, Tyrell Jordan, Montrell Jackson and John Polk, will have to have a good night catching the ball. We’re hoping our fullbacks, Jamonte Jordan and Landrae James, have big games. Claven Dunbar is our blocking back.”
Vidalia at Beekman Charter
VIDALIA — The Vidalia High School Vikings will be on the road for the second straight week as they travel to Bastrop, La. to take on the Beekman Charter School Tigers in the LHSAA District 2-2A opener for both teams at 7 p.m. Friday.
Vidalia enters this game with a 2-1 record after a hard-fought and weather-delayed 15-14 win at Homer High School in which the Vikings’ defense came up big with three huge turnovers, including an interception by Kerryon Swift and a fumble recovery by Jamar Lyons.
Beekman Charter, on the other hand, is 1-2 overall after being routed by Lakeside High School 34-6. The Tigers will also hope for a better showing for themselves after being shut out at Vidalia last year 43-0.
Ferriday at Rayville
FERRIDAY — Coming off a dramatic 21-20 comeback win at home over Class 5A LaGrange High School, the Ferriday High School Trojans now turn their attention to the District 2-2A portion of their schedule.
First off is a visit to Rayville, La. to take on the struggling Rayville High School Hornets in the district opener for both teams Friday at 7 p.m. This will be Ferriday’s third road game in the first four weeks of the 2018 season.
The Trojans will have to cut down on the penalties that cost them potential scoring drives and hope for better field position than they had last week.
They will also hope Da’minya Milligan picks up where he left off last week after having over 100 rushing yards and two touchdowns, including a 15-yard TD run and ensuing go-ahead two-point conversion run late in the fourth quarter.
Rayville is 0-3 overall after being routed at Union Parish High School 49-14 last week. The Hornets will also seek to avenge last year’s 24-0 loss at Ferriday.
Block at St. Mary’s
JONESVILLE — After being outscored 145-6 in their first three games of the season, the Block High School Bears will look to turn their season around Friday at 7 p.m. when they travel to Natchitoches, La. to take on the St. Mary’s High School Tigers in the LHSAA District 3-1A opener both teams.
Block dropped to 0-3 overall after getting shut out by Class 3A Jena High School last Thursday night 46-0. St. Mary’s fell to 1-2 overall after losing at North Caddo High School 34-14.
The Bears will also be seeking revenge after being embarrassed at home by the Tigers 53-8.
