Good news: Fall is here (unofficially)

With Labor Day behind us, we have officially entered the unofficial beginning of fall.

And as we unofficially close the door on summer, let us take a look back at the past week’s good news items.

* Last week, we learned that a 2 3/4 mile portion of Carter Street, from the foot of the Mississippi River Bridge on the Vidalia side to approximately Walmart, will be repaved sometime early next spring. While no one wants to endure more road construction, the effort will be worth it, especially since two new industries are gearing up to begin operations in Vidalia and the smoother stretch of road will benefit the increased traffic expected with those efforts.

* Natchez Historic Foundation’s new executive director Carter Burns is now on the job along with the organization’s director of preservations Chase Klugh. The two new young leaders bring young eyes and ideas to the Foundation’s mission of historic preservation of Natchez, and we’re sure they will find new ways to infuse interest in that mission and build on efforts of the Foundation’s past leaders, Ron and Mimi Miller.

* Natchez and Adams County will benefit from legislation passed last week in a special session of the Mississippi Legislature to provide funding for the state’s neglected roads and bridges. Natchez and Adams County will begin receiving funds under the legislation by next year with yearly increases in the amount over the next four years. Within four years, Adams County and Natchez will receive more than $1 million per year combined to help fund infrastructure maintenance and repair. The money will come from portions of internet sales tax revenues.

That is a look at just a few of the past week’s good news items. Keep your eyes focused for more as we get deeper into the fall, including, we hope, cooler temperatures, somewhere along the line.
