The Natchez-Adams School District received some good news last week with results of state test scores.

The district is one of the 10 most improved districts in the state on the English portion of the test.

That is certainly an achievement worth celebrating, and it shows the district is making progress in improving its performance.

The annual test measures student performance in English language arts and mathematics in grades 3-8 and English II and algebra in grades above the eighth grade in school districts across the state.

On the English portion of the test, the number of Natchez-Adams students performing proficient and above increased by 5.4 percent, from 17.7 percent in 2016-2017 to 23.1 percent in 2017-2018.

Only five other school districts in the state showed greater improvement.

NASD Superintendent Fred Butcher said the district has been working with teachers to improve curriculum and the test results seem to indicate the strategy has worked.

Nearly every grade level in the school district showed improvement on the English portion, some improving by as much as 17 percentage points.

NASD also showed improvement on the math portion of the test.

Five out of seven grade levels showed improvement on the 2017-2018 test compared to 2016-2017.

Congratulations, NASD teachers, students and administrators.

The test results are step in the right direction. As we embark on this new school year we are hopeful the district’s students continue to get better and better on the state test rankings.
