NATCHEZ — Hailey Ellis scored on a sacrifice fly by Fisher Iseminger with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Cathedral Lady Green Wave needed a late rally to defeat the Franklin Academy Lady Cougars 2-1 Monday afternoon.
“We played good defense and that kept it a low-scoring game,” Lady Green Wave head coach Craig Beesley said. “We finally scratched some runs in the sixth and seventh innings. I think our defense was the key to the game tonight.”
So was the performance by Addison Jackson, who pitched a complete game and allowed just one earned run on four hits with four strikeouts, two walks and one hit batter as Cathedral snapped a five-game losing streak.
“She’s been consistent for us all year. She’s been throwing strikes,” Beesley said.
Franklin Academy broke a scoreless tie with one run in the top of the fourth inning and it looked like that would be all the run support the Lady Cougars’ starting pitcher (No. 23; no name given) would need.
That was until the bottom of the sixth inning. Allie Feltus singled and later scored on a Madeline Smith single to tie the game at 1-1.
“Our spark came from Hailey, who had two hits, Addison’s performance on the mound, and Allie scoring that run for us in the sixth,” Beesley said.
Ellis went 2-for-2 while Feltus and Smith each went 1-for-3.
Cathedral (2-5) plays host to Central Private School in the MAIS District 5-AAA opener today at 6:15 p.m.
