BIRMINGHAM — Alcorn State University senior running back P.J. Simmons has been named the SWAC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year.
“It’s an honor,” Simmons said. “I’m extremely grateful.”
Simmons said he was overjoyed when he heard the news and added that he wasn’t surprised because he expects great things of himself.
Last year, Simmons saw significant time during his first season in Lorman. Simmons racked up 687 yards and seven touchdowns, while averaging 8.6 yards per carry. The Tallahassee, Florida, native is expected to replace current Baltimore Ravens and former All-American back De’Lance Turner as the Braves’ lead back.
Simmons said he believes it is just hype right now, but he is working to hopefully be named SWAC Offensive Player of the Year come December. However, Simmons said he is also still focused on Alcorn’s No. 1 goal: to win the SWAC.
“I need to have a solid game every time I play,” Simmons said. “I have to trust my offensive lineman every time I carry the ball because without them, I wouldn’t get a yard. Also, I have to, and I expect myself to, play with 100-percent engery every game.
“Although I’m extremely happy about this honor, my focus is on my team’s goals. To go win the SWAC and to claim a national championship. My squad’s performance comes before mine.”
