RIVER RIDGE, La. — In one swift play, the Vidalia Little League Softball 12U all-stars held on to a one-run lead and advanced at their state tournament Tuesday.
Vidalia catcher Hallie Weatherly found shortstop Allie LeBlanc to tag out a runner attempting to steal second base, ending the 5-4 win over Bossier City.
“It was an incredible play,” Vidalia coach Jaclyn LeBlanc said. “They all made a dogpile at home plate and were hugging Allie.
“But I have to say, it took all 12 girls to get the win, and they really played like a team. I’m proud of every single one.”
Vidalia jumped out to a 5-1 lead by the fifth inning, but a few miscues allowed Bossier City to come close going into the sixth, 5-4.
Vidalia’s two pitchers — starter LeBlanc and closer Rami Burks — combined to pitch a no-hitter to seal the win.
“We held them in the sixth inning to no runs. They gave me everything they had on the mound today,” Jaclyn LeBlanc said. “Rami just battled (in the last two innings) and it was all I could as of a 12-year-old. That’s a lot of pressure for anybody, but she really fought.”
Marlee Donald had Vidalia’s only hit in the win on a bunt. It advanced additional runners on stolen bases, walks and errors.
Vidalia will play at 6 p.m. today against the loser of Jackson Parish and Lake Charles, which was played late Tuesday.
“Every girl I had on that field today, they did their best,” LeBlanc said.
