NATCHEZ — After learning no ordinance exists regulating the setting off of fireworks within city limits, Natchez Police Chief Walter Armstrong asked aldermen Tuesday to finally draft one.
During Tuesday’s Natchez Board of Aldermen meeting, Armstrong asked the board to let himself, Natchez Fire Department Chief Aaron Wesley, the chair of the Natchez fire committee Benjamin Davis and the City Attorney Bob Latham craft an ordinance that relates to shooting fireworks within the city.
Based on his previous understanding, Armstrong said the idea of a fireworks ban worked as a de facto ordinance, with officials having thought for decades that such a law existed.
Ward 3 Alderwoman Sarah Smith asked Armstrong if this was a motion to create an ordinance to prohibit fireworks or just an ordinance to regulate them.
“I want input from everyone on the board,” Armstrong said.
The board unanimously approved his request, though Alderman Benjamin Davis was not present.
