Heat doesn’t weigh down good news

We are now a week-plus deep into July, and not surprisingly, it’s hot outside.

People are finding ways to enjoy themselves, however, despite the hot weather.

Some folks are choosing to read books in the cool indoors, or to escape to a darkened movie theater to enjoy a summer blockbuster and still others are heading to the lake to cool off in the water or are taking vacations to other locations to avoid the local heat.

As we forge deeper into July, the temperatures are sure to get even higher, but let’s not think about that now.

Instead, let’s take a look back at some of the good news from last week.

Speaking of keeping cool, Saturday at Lake St. John was the 26th-annual Flotilla and Blessing of the Boats. Several boats decked out in patriotic decorations and some in just plain fun decorations turned out for the parade and blessing. In between the ceremonies people relaxed and cooled off by taking a dip in the beautiful lake.

Wednesday, the nation celebrated Independence Day, and that includes the Miss-Lou. Thanks to the Vidalia Beautification Committee and generous donations from individuals, agencies and businesses throughout the area, the Miss-Lou was treated to a splendid and patriotic fireworks display over the Mississippi. People from all around came to both sides of the riverbanks to enjoy the show and celebrate being Americans.

The Natchez Little Theatre’s summer youth group presented a stellar rendition of the Disney musical “The Lion King.” Every performance was sold out and by all accounts the show was outstanding on every level including props, costumes, singing, dancing and acting.

Natchez got a big plug when Visit Natchez landed what officials described as a great deal on advertising that included magazine articles and spots that showed up 120 times between June 29 and July 4 on a giant television screen in New York City’s Times Square.
