A pair of back-to-back home runs in the fifth inning propelled the Vidalia Little League Softball 10U all-stars to a victory over Jackson Parish Monday night and a spot in the state championship game.
Macee Green and Addie Johnson both hit inside-the-park bombs to the outfield to aid Vidalia to the 8-3 victory, staying undefeated as the host team in the tournament.
“I think our entire team has the confidence now,” coach Christal McGlothin said. “It pumped everyone up, not just the ones who were batting.
“I can’t even explain it. It was the most exciting moment.”
After Jackson Parish struck first with one run in the first inning, Vidalia answered with five runs in the third inning — all scored on wild pitches.
After that, McGlothin said she felt something big was about to happen.
“Macee had been in a slump,” she said. “I had told the other coaches beforehand that I thought she was about to hit a good one. She did more than I thought she would.”
Green’s hit batted in one additional run, while Johnson’s solo homer was the icing on the cake for Vidalia.
Johnson also pitched the win.
The host team advances to today’s championship game at 8 p.m. It will play the winner of Jackson Parish and Avoyelles American in a game beginning at 6 p.m.
The 9-and 10-year-olds are the only age group to never have won a state championship in Vidalia Little League history.
“There’s a lot at stake,” McGlothin said.
