Taking first dibs: Vidalia 10U team wins in first round of state tournament

The Vidalia Little League Softball 10U all-star team won its first game of its state tournament Friday night, but coach Christal McGlothin knows it’s just the beginning.

Vidalia took down Lake Charles in four innings in front of a home crowd, 13-2, but McGlothin said she needs to see a lot more hits if her team wants to continue in the winner’s bracket.

“We aren’t used to slow pitching,” she said. “We just couldn’t adjust.”

McGlothin’s team registered five hits one the night, scoring and advancing the remainder of its baserunners on errors and walks.

The true savior in Friday night’s matchup, McGlothin said, was Vidalia’s pitching.

Addie Johnson tossed all four innings, striking out just about every batter she faced. In the second inning, Johnson threw nine consecutive strikes to retire all three batters in the frame.

“Our pitching is what got us through that game,” McGlothin said. “I’m not surprised.”

Johnson did give up two runs in the first inning, but after that McGlothin said everything fell into place.

“The first inning she was a little rocky and it kind of had me a little worried,” she said. “But, she can always come back. There’s never a doubt in my mind.”

Moving forward, Vidalia advances to play Moss Bluff tonight at 8 p.m.

While the first-round win wasn’t perfect, McGlothin said she is confident her team will continue to shine.

“I think it was definitely a good lesson. We are in the winner’s bracket so I know we will face better pitching from now on,” she said. “I’m pleased. We won the game, but it wasn’t a great win.

“Out hitting was just not where it needed to be. Hitting needs to come up for us to win.”

Johnson, Molly Shirley, Natalie Webb, Kinsley Leblanc and Tierra Hardin all registered one hit in the win.
