NATCHEZ — Local, state and federal law enforcement officers executed a large-scale operation Wednesday morning Adams County that led to multiple arrests, including one for an armed robbery committed last week.

The agencies involved in the “sweep” targeting wanted persons included the Natchez Police Department and Adams County Sheriff’s Office as well as the U.S. Marshals, Mississippi Department of Corrections and Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics, Natchez Police Chief Walter Armstrong said.

“This is just the tip of the iceberg where we’re going to go after individuals who have shown total disregard for public safety and the rule of the law in our community,” Armstrong said.

The operation landed at least eight arrests, the most notable arrest involved 23-year-old Tavonte Denzell White, who police said was part of a duo that robbed a victim at gunpoint Saturday at 2:10 a.m. in the parking lot of Taste of Chicago.

“(One of them) placed the barrel against him and basically demanded the belongings from his pocket,” Capt. Scott Frye said.

Frye said the victim later identified White as one of the suspects. The other suspect remains at large, and Frye said more arrests could be pending in that case.

Hours later, Frye said, White sustained non-life-threatening injuries in a shooting that occurred on Abbott Street in downtown Natchez, which police are still investigating. White allegedly told police that he did not see the shooter(s), whom Frye said shot several times at 11 p.m. Saturday.

At this point, police have no reason to believe the alleged armed robbery and the shooting were connected, Frye said.

Another individual arrested Wednesday morning was 28-year-old Jermon R. Green, arrested on a warrant for sale of a controlled substance.

The operation manifested after weeks of meetings between Armstrong and numerous federal agencies about working to serve these warrants, Armstrong said.

Adams County Sheriff Travis Patten said he thought the operation was successful and said he was happy to assist the police department in making the arrests, while also noting that this would not be the last time authorities conduct such an operation.

“This is just one of many,” Patten said.

ACSO Maj. Shane Daugherty said the following remaining arrests involved these individuals, wanted for either violating their parole or committing misdemeanors:

  •  Torrance Redell Knowles, wanted by Natchez police for contempt of court (failure to appear)
  •  Eric Anthony Davis, 37, wanted by the Mississippi Department of Corrections on a probation violation
  • 4 Bengamea Jerome Robinson, 54, wanted by the Mississippi Department of Corrections on a probation violation
  • 4 Larry Earl Smith, 28, wanted by the Mississippi Department of Corrections on a probation violation
  • 4 Joshua Devon McLaurin, 22, wanted by the Mississippi Department of Corrections on a probation violation
  • 4 Kelvin Dywanna Jones, 37, wanted by the Mississippi Department of Corrections on a probation violation

All of Wednesday’s arrests remain under investigation, Armstrong said.
