Cool off with review of good news

This week, we will round out June and plow ahead right into July. As the summer heat continues, take a moment to cool off and look back at last week’s good news.
- As they have been all June, the Natchez-Adams County Humane Society continued last week to give both animals and humans a chance to find a new companion, but at a discounted price. With early summer being a typical time for overcrowding, the shelter has lowered its adoption fees this month, bringing the cost of adopting a big dog down from $75 to $50 and the cost of taking home a kitten from $50 to $35. These adoptions help not only the animals, but also the shelter itself, which becomes strained by the overcrowding. With this being the last week of discounted rates, prospective pet owners should consider heading to the shelter.
- After much anticipation, the finalization of “Project Blue” is expected Thursday. The project, in which a still yet-to-be-named manufacturer is to purchase Vidalia’s former Fruit of the Loom plant for up to $12 million, has been oft discussed and long in the making. With $4 million of revenue from the purchase expected within a matter of weeks, the progress is a great reprieve for an area that would benefit from some additional industry.
- After purchasing the antebellum, Greek Revival style house Ravenna last year, Fred and Melinda Kent now have their eyes set on turning the former Prentiss Club building into a tourist attraction. The Kents bought the Pearl Street building on Wednesday with plans to turn the property into a museum to host traveling art exhibits. Realtor.com showed that the 12,000-square-foot property had been listed for sale for 633 days with an asking price of $459,500. If investments such as these pan out, that could spell good news for revitalization.
As we steam ahead into the seventh month of 2018, let us remember to stay involved in our community and not just lament shortcomings, but instead always try to contribute to future success.
