Sicily Island High School basketball coach Curtis Shavers thought he had missed his chance to meet legendary football coach Lou Holtz.
That was until he got a second one.
Shavers was sitting outside his hotel in Shreveport, Louisiana this week during the LHSAA Summer Convention when another attendee had asked him if he had just seen Holtz walk by.
“No, I must have missed him,” Shavers said. “Just a few minutes later, he just so happened to walk back.”
Shavers said as soon as he saw Holtz — most known for his ten-year stint as head coach of the Notre Dame football team — he sprung into action.
“I took a couple photos on my phone, then the guy asked me to stand up,” Shavers said. “The guy took my phone, and he said ‘C’mon I’ll take your picture.’
“He was real cordial. I was fortunate enough to be there at the right time.”
Shavers said even though he didn’t get the chance to say much to Holtz, the experience was something he’ll never forget.
“It was a once in a lifetime thing,” he said. “You never think you’ll meet someone like that.”
Holtz was in Shreveport serving as a speaker for the conference, Shavers said, which was moved this year from its previous location in Baton Rouge.
