FAYETTE — Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office deputies are investigating the death of a man found fatally shot in the face Wednesday morning.
Jefferson County Sheriff Peter Walker said his deputies received a call of what neighbors believed to be a deceased man in a trailer house at 158 Knapp St.
Upon arrival at approximately 7:20 a.m., deputies found Ernest Lee, 54, with a gunshot wound to the face lying on his back near the open doorway of the trailer, Walker said.
Whether the door was opened by a concerned neighbor or left open by a perpetrator is unknown, Walker said.
Though Lee was alone in the residence, Walker said the sheriff’s office does not believe the wound to be self-inflicted and that he is treating the case as a murder investigation.
Walker said Lee neither owns nor resides in the trailer, and that it is unclear at this time why he was there. Walker said Lee was fully dressed when deputies arrived, but that he was not wearing any shoes.
Upon a search of the property, Walker said deputies found a large quantity of narcotics.
The person who currently lives in the trailer was arrested on a charge of possession of the narcotics, but no one has as of yet been charged in relation to the homicide, Walker said.
“This is an ongoing investigation,” Walker said. “We don’t have any concrete leads at this time, but we are working extensively on this. We are asking the public, if they have any information, to please call the sheriff’s office.”
