JACKSON — The Cathedral School girls golf team won the MAIS state championship Thursday at the Country Club of Jackson.
Kayla Starr, Liza Mayo and Maggie Ulmer golfed Thursday. The top two scores — Starr and Mayo — were counted for a combined top score of 185.
Cathedral beat out second-place finisher Jackson Prep with a score of 193.
Cathedral golf coach Kurt Russ said while he was able to watch others golf, he wasn’t sure how his girls stacked up until the very end.
“I had no idea we were in the mix to win until they posted the scores,” he said. “You kind of have an idea of how your team is doing, but you have no idea what the other girls are shooting.”
When it came time to see the scores, Russ said the moment was pure bliss.
“All of us were standing around and we were all just so happy,” he said. “I actually had to walk away for a second because I didn’t want to jinx it.
“All the blood left my body. I’m still shaking.”
Starr came in third overall with a score of 85. Mayo shot an individual 100, while Ulmer shot a 108.
The overall individual winner was Sara Hederman from Jackson Prep with a score of 78.
“When they posted her score, I thought we were done,” Russ said. “It just shows how important it is to have a strong second golfer.”
After the small scare, Russ said he was overjoyed with the win.
“It was a moment you can’t forget,” he said. “It was a great team effort. I’m just so proud.”
Lady Green Wave member Mary Evans Kelley was not in attendance.
