Concordia Parish makes first revisions to this year’s budget

VIDALIA — Concordia Parish revised its fiscal year 2018 budget in certain areas that had at least a 5-percent discrepancy from the original budget approved in December.
Parish jurors approved Monday the amended budget, which included numerous changes in the general fund.
Many of the changes involved relatively small amounts, though some numbered in the thousands or tens of thousands.
For example, the revised budget accounts for $8,500 in capital outlay equipment used to handle drainage issues in the parish. The purchase of the equipment was approved in December, but because the invoice did not go through until January, the parish could not budget for the item.
The new budget also reflects approximately $39,000 transferred into the general fund from the parish’s criminal court fund. That figure is half of the criminal court fund’s ending balance from last year. The other half goes to the court system, which can be used to cover any expenses aside from capital outlay, parish Secretary-Treasurer Sandi Burley said.
The same fund also demonstrates a potential increase in what the parish spends on psychiatric evaluations.
After the amendments, the budget reflected $5,000 in budgeted expenses for psychiatric evaluations for parish residents. The parish foots the bill of $100 for every physician emergency certificate or coroner’s emergency certificate, Burley said. These are required for psychiatric patients to receive certain types of treatment.
So far this year alone, the parish has spent approximately $3,000 on such expenses, Burley said. That puts the parish on pace to spend well more than double the approximately $4,600 spent on psychiatric evaluations in 2017.
Other changes to the budget involved either very minor revisions or procedural changes made for the sake of efficient reporting.
