“Two First Ladies:” is the pretext of the title of the annual Grace McNeil history lecture to be hosted by the Natchez Historical Society on Tuesday.
From a historical perspective the topic is interesting enough, especially in light of the recent death of former first lady Barbara Bush.
The following text of the title, however, really puts the subject into proper perspective: “Varina Howell Davis and Mary Todd Lincoln.”
Those two women were respectively first ladies of the United States of the Confederacy and the United States during the U.S. Civil War, and Varina Howell Davis was a Natchez native.
Lecturer and re-enactor, Judy Wiggins, will present the lecture that promises to be an entertaining and enlightening look the lives of those first ladies and the unusual circumstances under which they served in those roles.
Furthermore, the event will benefit the work of the Natchez Historical Society in its efforts to preserve the history of Natchez and Adams County.
We support preserving the history of Natchez and Adams County and encourage you to support those efforts as well.
A good start would be to attend the lecture at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Trinity Church Parish Hall, 305 S. Commerce St.
There, you can not only learn about the two first ladies but also learn how you can be a part of the society’s efforts to preserve our history.
