Mississippi River traffic restricted as crews clean up oil spill after ship hits pier

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The Coast Guard says a cargo ship hit a pier and spilled 4,200 gallons of fuel oil, and 10 miles of the Mississippi River were closed for the cleanup.

A news release says the Singapore-flagged “Pac Antares” hit the pier Thursday morning. Nobody was hurt.

The river closure stopped the Canal Street Ferry on a busy day: the French Quarter Festival’s first day. News outlets reported that a bus will shuttle people to and from the Algiers Ferry Landing across the river from the French Quarter.

The Baton Rouge Advocate reports the Coast Guard was using aircraft to spot the oil, Containment boom and skimmers are being used to help collect it from the river, according to Cmdr. Zac Ford, of the Coast Guard. Cleanup efforts were complicated by a high river, at 14.5 feet, and a fast current of about six knots, he told The Advocate.

Ford could not estimate when the river might be reopened. Parish governments downriver from the spill had been notified, he said.

OMI Environmental Solutions was brought in to clean the spill.

The Coast Guard says it was putting out containment and absorbent booms and pads, and had a skimmer boat pulling oil from the surface, with four more on the way.
