NATCHEZ — Emergency responders injured Tuesday while attempting to rescue the homeowner from her burning house are recovering and expected to return to work soon, officials say.
The Tuesday evening house fire on Gaylor Road killed Artiemese Harris-Frye and hospitalized two sheriff’s deputies.
The deputies, Stephen Karabelen and Kelvin Bailey, went to Merit Health Natchez for treatment after suffering smoke-inhalation while trying to retrieve Harris-Frye from inside her burning house, Adams County Sheriff Travis Patten said.
Medical personnel recommended Karabelen stay overnight for further observation and released Bailey after four hours of treatment, Patten said.
After his overnight stay, Karabelen was released Wednesday, Patten said.
Two firefighters who also entered the burning residence several times, Natchez Fire Department Chief Aaron Wesley said Tuesday, but were unharmed.
Battalion Chief Leland Rymer said both firefighters, Station 4 Capt. David Freeman and firefighter Aronte Patten, will be returning to work today.
“I just want to commend the work of our emergency responders,” Sheriff Patten said. “Our deputies, they went above and beyond what they had to do. They risked their lives to save this woman. That’s the most selfless thing you can do.”
