NATCHEZ — A grand jury indicted a Natchez couple this week that deputies believe trafficked drugs within 1,500 feet of a church.

Adams County Sheriff’s Office deputies Wednesday arrested Adriana F. Carter, 45, 13 N. Circle Drive, on two charges of controlled substance violation and two charges of possession of a stolen firearm.

Carter’s indictment alleges she and her husband Cedric Jermain Carter possessed more than 30 grams of cocaine and more than 20 grams of codeine with the intent to sell or distribute. The indictment contends the couple also possessed a stolen firearm.

Deputies arrested Cedric Carter Oct. 19 after executing a search warrant on the property and finding approximately 3 ounces of suspected cocaine on the kitchen counter and another in a trashcan.

Deputies did not arrest Adriana Carter in that initial warrant execution, Adams County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Cal Green said, but instead took her case directly to the grand jury.

Green said Cedric Carter, who turned himself in Monday for his indictment, would be subject to enhanced penalties upon conviction since he has been convicted of a felony offense.

Cedric Carter was convicted in 2006 in Baton Rouge on a charge of possession of a schedule II controlled drug substance.

The couple also is eligible for enhanced punishment upon conviction because the drugs and suspected trafficking were located in a church zone.

Adriana Carter was still in the Adams County Jail on a $2,000 bond as of Wednesday morning.
