Woman charged with DUI after car hit bridge rail and closing the bridge

NATCHEZ — The Mississippi River Bridge was closed early Monday after a Vidalia woman crashed her car into the outer rail, officers say.

Vidalia Police Chief Joey Merrill said Monday that a Vidalia woman lost control of her vehicle just before 3 a.m. and hit the outer rail of the Mississippi River bridge.
Merrill said police believe the driver was intoxicated.

Merrill said the bridge was closed to through traffic for more than an hour as officers removed the damaged vehicle and arrested its driver, Leah Landers, 23, 314 Elm St. on a charge of driving while intoxicated first offense and care-less operation of a motor vehicle.

Merrill said officers arrest-ed Landers after she refused medical treatment.
No lasting damage was done to the bridge and Merrill said he was unsure if the car was damaged beyond repair.

Landers was being held in the Concordia Parish Jail Monday morning on a $950 bond.
