Best year yet: Lone senior leading Monterey through season filled with youth

Monterey High School senior Cameron King knew his team had the chance to win very few games this season, but he stuck around anyway.
King decided to take a chance — for his love of the game — and is now leading the Wolves as their only upperclassman.
“I have always loved this game,” King said. “I have been playing travel ball since I was knee-high to a grasshopper.”
As the lone leader, King knows his teammates will have all eyes on him.
“I know they aren’t experienced for high schoolers. We have no juniors, just two sophomores and most of the rest are in middle school,” King said. “When I get down, all of them get down.”
King takes his spot as Monterey’s starting third baseman. From there, he did admit he is still learning how to lead.
“I can have a hot-head sometimes,” he said. “Usually, I can just make a better play or a better hit and I’m over it. It can sometimes give me a lot of pressure.”
Along with the majority of youth, Monterey also has a new head coach in Patrick Wells. Former coach Eric Richard moved over this season to assist the Lady Wolves softball team.
Despite the change, Wells does have experience as he served as an assistant last season.
“He’s learning just like us, but he knows a good bit about the game,” King said. “He’s known baseball, and he got a feel for high school last year. It’s really coming to him now as a head coach.”
While King is doing his best to soak in his last year, he knows the future of the program will continue to blossom.
“I know all of them that are here now stay, because they are going to be a really good team,” he said.
“I think they way I’m going this is my best year so far. I was coming into this year think we weren’t going to be anything, but it’s been the best yet. I’m just trying to play.”
The Wolves will be back in action at 4 p.m. today when they travel to Georgetown.
