Leaning on youth: Monterey softball dominating with host of young athletes

The oldest player on Monterey High School’s softball team is lone junior Madison Passman. With a host of young talent, many might be worried.
But, that’s not the case for Cary Shivley and his No. 7 LHSAA Class B Lady Wolves.
“They are not worried about it,” he said. “They look to themselves and work together to accomplish everything that they want to get done.
“This bunch of girls, they have their mind set on something. They’ll get after it.”
Backing up Passman is a handful of sophomores, a few freshmen, as well as some players still in middle school.
The benefit, Shively said, is double the experience. A good number of players will see game time in both varsity and junior varsity games.
“It is what it is. It’s just the way it worked out with this group,” Shively said. “They aren’t scared of anybody. They just show up and play — diving into the dirt, doing whatever they have to do.”
The Lady Wolves currently sit at 6-4 on the year after notching a win in their district opener against Grace Christian Tuesday, 12-0.
In the win, eighth-grader Allie Lipsey showed her poise, knocking a home run just over the left field fence.
Lipsey knows though her team is young, the experience now will pay off in the future. She credits not only her team’s dedication, but the leadership from those who know best.
“We are definitely going to get better,” she said. “Our coaches are really good, they make you want to learn from them. If we didn’t have coaches like we have, I wouldn’t want to play.”
Additionally this season, Monterey has wins over teams in higher classifications such as Oak Grove, Vidalia and French Settlement.
For such a small school, Shively said he has been pleased with his team’s composure.
“We’ve played some really good teams already, and we’ve held our own with them,” he said. “They don’t back down from anybody. They will play anybody, any time and anywhere.”
Moving forward, Shively said he is looking forward to seeing where this season leads, hoping that the future continues to stay bright.
“They work hard, which makes them fun to be around and fun to work with,” he said. “It’s a great group of girls.”
The Lady Wolves will be back in action at 4 p.m. today when they host Oak Hill.
