NATCHEZ — A shootout early Wednesday morning at a convenience store on Old Washington Road, police say, killed one person and sent another person to the hospital.
Upon preliminary investigation, the first homicide within city limits this year occurred at approximately 1 a.m. at Zipy and appears to have involved at least three or four shooters, Natchez Police Chief Walter Armstrong said.
The individual who was killed, Armstrong said, suffered multiple bullet wounds.
At this early stage of the investigation, Armstrong said he is unsure of a motive or if the incident involved any gang-related activity.
“We don’t know that, but it was quite apparent that there was some bad blood between the parties involved,” Armstrong said.
Investigators believe the deceased involved himself in the shootout, Armstrong said.
The chief said one other individual believed to be involved in the shooting suffered what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries and eventually received treatment at University of Mississippi Medical Center. Investigators have spoken to this individual, Armstrong said.
Police continue to investigate the incident, and no names have been released at this point. Armstrong said that he feels confident the department will make multiple arrests in the near future.
