Monterey High School’s Maddy Green just couldn’t let Allie Lipsey be the only player with a home run Tuesday.
Despite Green only crossing the plate on a bad throw, her hit directly followed Lipsey’s that had fallen over the left field fence as the pair led the Lady Wolves to a 12-0 victory over Grace Christian in five innings.
“I felt like I really had to cross the plate,” Green said laughing. “The whole time I was thinking that I couldn’t follow up her home run with a simple hit.”
Monterey totaled 17 hits on the afternoon and found a spark in the second inning. Besides the two runs from Green and Lipsey, the Lady Wolves scored an additional six runs in the inning.
“We were able to string several hits together in just one inning, and all of them were with two outs,” Monterey coach Cary Shivley said. “That was big to not let down, get on a roll and score like that.”
Jessica Woodrum and Harlie Murray both tallied three hits to aid the Lady Wolves in the win. Green, Sarah Gray, Harlie Murray, Madison Passman and Kayleigh Mount each added another two.
With the win, Shively said Monterey (6-4, 1-0) opened district play on the right foot.
“Any time you win in district, it’s a good win,” he said. “We are off to a good start, because now we only have five more district games.”
After Monterey held Grace Christian scoreless through two more innings, it scored four more runs in the fourth inning to seal the win.
Murray pitched three innings to earn the win for the Lady Wolves, recording five strikeouts along the way. Hannah Hitt pitched the first two innings and the duo allowed just one hit from Grace Christian.
“We went to Harlie in the third, and I thought she did a great job,” Shivley said. “They are both strong pitchers.”
Monterey will be back in action at 4 p.m. Thursday when the Lady Wolves take on Oak Hill at home.
