Come celebrate new Habitat house dedication

The Natchez-Adams County affiliate of Habitat for Humanity is proud to announce another family has moved into a new home. Mrs. Carol Moore along with her father, Bill Harr, sister, Linda Harr, and daughter, Megan Moore, are now residing in their new home located at 14 Foster Mound Road. This lot was donated by Delta Bank.

A formal dedication ceremony is set for 3 p.m. Sunday at the house. At this time the keys to their home will be officially presented to the family.

All financial donors, volunteer workers, other Habitat homeowners, city officials and the general public are invited to come to the dedication ceremony.  Please come and see the emotional impact a new home can have on a family.

To find the home, go north on Martin Luther King Street three miles past Hicks Chiks and take a right on Foster Mound Road. It can be a bit confusing as it is a three-way intersection with another road leading to the airport. Parking at the house is limited so you may wish to park at the three-way intersection and walk a short distance to the house.

Construction of this house started back in March 2017 and it was built primarily with volunteer labor; 110 different volunteers spent the equivalent of more than 350 work days to finish the house in about 12 months.  Included in this total are the 250-plus hours worked by the Moore family as a certain number of “sweat equity” (actual work time) hours is a requirement strictly imposed by Habitat.

A very special thank you to those who provided their expertise free of charge or at a substantial discount. These include Lee Scott Construction (electrical), Scooter Cauthern (dug foundation and driveway), Chuck Golden (flooring installation), J&J Carpet (flooring), Robert Fuller Roofing Company, Dick Thompson (crane for lifting trusses) and Bob Longmire’s Buffalo Sod Farm (pallets of  sod).

And we cannot forget all the volunteer groups that helped throughout the process: Jefferson Street United Methodist Church Men’s Club, Grace United Methodist Church, First Baptist Church Iron Men, Delta Sigma Theta sorority, Allstate agents, Delta Bank, students from Fallin school, Vidalia Key Club and Natchez Early College, employees from Walmart and members of Moose Lodge. And a special thanks to the Mormon youth who are in the Natchez area on their two-year mission trip; this group put in 800 hours on the house.

Habitat for Humanity International, based in Americus, Ga., is an ecumenical Christian ministry dedicated to eliminating poverty housing. Habitat has built more than one million houses and more than five million people are living in Habitat houses they helped build and are now buying through no-profit, zero-interest mortgages.  Here in Natchez the local affiliate has completed its 21st house since its organization in 1991.

If you wish to make a financial contribution, donate construction materials, receive an application for a Habitat home, or volunteer to work on the next house, you may contact Habitat for Humanity by calling 601-445-8639, 601-807-4956, or by writing to P.O. Box 100, Natchez, MS. 39121.
