For more than two decades, Forrest “Al” Johnson has helped to lead the criminal justice system in our corner of the world.

Johnson recently decided he would not seek reelection as a judge for the Sixth Circuit District that includes Adams County.

After 24 years, Johnson says he will retire.

In that time, Johnson, along with fellow judge Lillie Blackman Sanders, has faced practically every accused murderer, rapist and felon that is prosecuted.

He’s seen and heard the accused, victims and their families break down with emotion, and he’s been a steady, firm hand to keep the process of justice moving.

It’s a bit of a thankless job being judge.

A bit like being an NFL coach, everyone thinks you’re overpaid for what you do, that they could do it better and questions how hard you work.

Make no mistake; Johnson has worked hard in his six terms in office.

He’s worked hard at being fair to the accused and to victims.

He’s worked hard at making attorneys and jurors follow the law.

And, he’s worked hard to build the reputation he has built for himself, one of a firm, but fair judge.

That’s what the system is supposed to be about.

While we will miss his knowledge, his candor and his professionalism, we wish Johnson the best in his retirement.

After all he’s seen and dealt with through the years, he’s certainly earned some peace and quiet.
