The perfect Fort: Vidalia freshman bats 5-for-5 to lead win over Cathedral

Batting 5-for-5 doesn’t happen often, unless you’re Peyton Fort.
The Vidalia High School freshman popped hit after hit Thursday night, leading the Vikings to a 17-2 victory over Cathedral at Chester Willis Field in five innings.
“It’s nice to have freshman like that because it makes my job a whole lot easier,” Vidalia coach Mike Norris said. “He’s trusting the process and hitting it up the middle like we are asking.”
Fort drove in three runs, and scored four himself. Yet he wasn’t the only one to shine for the Vikings (4-1), as three more players ended with multiple hits.
Leo Lozano ended the night 3-for-4, with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored. Dom Harveston had a game-high four RBIs on 2-for-4 batting and one run scored, and Cam Rodgers had another two hits.
“We put it all together. Sixteen hits will do it,” Norris said. “Hopefully it gives us some confidence, because we were lacking that. I think we may have gotten some.”
The boost, Norris said, is all a part of the plan.
“We have been changing some guys around in the lineup, and we found one that we like,” he said. “We hope it’s going to work.”
On the other hand, Cathedral is still looking for the right combination.
The Green Wave’s only two hits came on doubles from senior Caden Poole, who ended 2-for-2 with two RBIs.
Cathedral coach Craig Beesley said to find a win, his team (0-4) must keep the opposing score much lower.
“Caden is the one that providing the leadership for us right now, but we can’t average two hits a game,” Beesley said. “For us to win, we have to keep it under five runs. Anything over five is going to be hard for us to beat because we just aren’t going to get that many hits and score than many runs.”
With an abundance of youth, Beesley said the learning experience is a part of Cathedral’s plan, too.
“The only thing we can do is keep playing,” he said. “We aren’t going to give up, and I’m not going to give up on them.”
Despite the lopsided score, Beesley said it was a positive to play a local team with talent.
“This is one of the better teams (Vidalia) has had in a while,” he said. “It just wasn’t our night. We couldn’t make routine plays.”
Likewise, Norris knows how hard Cathedral will work to get better.
“Coach Beesley and them are struggling a little bit right now, but they’ll be back,” Norris said. “I would play them 50 times if I could, though, just because they are a good group of guys.”
Of three Vidalia pitchers, Nick Melton earned the win in 1.2 innings. Ben Foster pitched 3.0 innings and took the loss for Cathedral.
Vidalia will be back in action at 4 p.m. tomorrow in the Comeaux Tournament, playing another two game on Saturday. The Green Wave will travel to Franklin County at 7 p.m. today.
