Caroline Kaiser’s rebound and put-back off a missed shot with five seconds left allowed the Cathedral High School Lady Green Wave to escape with a 42-41 win over the Central Private School Lady Rebels Friday night in an MAIS District 5-AAA game at Louisiana School for the Deaf.
“We were behind and had it out of bounds with 12 seconds left. I don’t know who took the shot, but Caroline got the rebound and made the shot,” Lady Green Wave coach Peter Arnold said. “They called a timeout. We stole the inbound pass and ran the (clock) out.”
Cathedral got off to a rough start and trailed Central Private 10-4 at the end of the first quarter. The next two quarters remained very close with the Lady Green Wave only managing to cut two points off the Lady Rebels’ lead by the end of the third quarter at 33-29.
However, Cathedral was able to respond in the fourth quarter thanks in large part because of its defense. The Lady Green Wave scored 13 points while holding Central Private to just eight points over the final eight minutes.
“It was a really good ending to an otherwise terribly played game,” Arnold said.
Kaiser led all scorers with 16 points and Lessley Dooley had 12 points. Danielle Loftstrom led the Lady Rebels with 13 points.
Cathedral (21-6, 4-1) plays host to district and cross-town rival Adams County Christian School with first place in the district on the line at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
