NATCHEZ — Adam County Christian School’s Darius Demby knows how to make a transition.

From attending public school in middle school and then moving Trinity Episcopal for his eighth and ninth grade year, Demby is happy to have a home with the Rebels during his senior year.

“It’s been a fun year,” he said. “It’s really not been that hard to transition, but it is sad because it is my last year now.”

For the past three years, Demby has started for the Rebels playing forward and center, and each year at ACCS has been an evolution of its own, too.

As a sophomore, Demby and the Rebels won a district title, ending as runners-up in South State and eventually falling in the MAIS Class AAA state tournament. Last season, on the other hand, Demby received significant playing time in a rebuilding year where the Rebels had just two seniors.

Now, Demby is trying to take what he has learned to make the best out of his final campaign alongside fellow seniors Julian Wilson, Josh Day and Keller Thompson.

“At the beginning, we didn’t really have much chemistry,” Demby said. “But now, I’ve seen us move the ball more and play more team ball. This year, we have so much depth.”

To have a constant stabilized player such as Demby, ACCS coach Richy Spears said, is a dream.

“Everybody loves Demby. He doesn’t say a whole lot, but that’s not a bad thing,” Spears said. “He never says anything back, he’s a great teammate and he just tries his hardest all the time.”

Through up and down changes, Spears has seen Demby grow, too.

“He’s gotten better every year, especially with his aggressiveness,” Spears said. “I don’t know if that just comes with time, but he’s a great kid. He really is. He always does what you ask of him.”

Demby admits one of his favorite parts of ACCS has been learning from his coach.

“I’m going to miss Coach Spears. He never seems to be wrong about anything,” Demby said. “He will get on your case about what you have to do, but I love him.”

Closing in on the later half of his final year, Demby hopes all the work will pay off. The Rebels (8-5, 2-0) will be back in action Tuesday when they host Central Private in the third of six district games.

“I want to go to state and get a ring, that’s what I’ve planned to do my whole life,” Demby said. “I got close my tenth grade year, so I’m just trying to do what I can. I just know I have to keep playing my game and doing what I have to do. We just have to win ball games.”
