Forever friends: Cathedral, Trinity rivals share bond through connection with Saints

Sterling Yarbrough and Colby Passman have shared countless memories on Trinity Episcopal’s basketball court, but Tuesday may have been their last.
Passman — now a Cathedral School junior — congregated in the Saints’ visiting locker room for the first time Tuesday after growing up alongside Yarbrough at Trinity. And as he wore a Green Wave jersey, it was the last time Passman will ever play on the court on which he has played since childhood.
Following last Friday’s announcement that Trinity will close permanently at the end of this school year, Passman reflected on his time spent as a Saint after transferring to Cathedral in December 2016.
“Some days I wake up in the morning and I think to myself, ‘I go to Cathedral, that’s crazy,’” he said. “Being at Trinity my whole life, it really hasn’t sunken in yet.
“It’s fun to play against all my Trinity friends, but it is bittersweet because this is it. This is the end.”
Trinity defeated Cathedral in possibly the final matchup between the cross-town schools, 78-57, and while the rivalry hasn’t had much time to develop, Yarbrough said the emotions were still there.
Cathedral made its move from the MHSAA to the MAIS just before the start of the 2015 school year, making Tuesday just one of a handful of games the schools have played against one another.
“This is my last time playing Cathedral,” Yarbrough said. “I had to go out with a bang.”
And what a bang Yarbrough made, sinking five 3-pointers to score 15 points for the Saints in the win.
“There was definitely a different feel,” Yarbrough said. “I’ve been at Trinity all my life so I feel like now every game is my last game. Every game, I’m going to play with a chip on my shoulder and give it all I’ve got. Today we were playing a cross-town rival so I gave it a little extra.”
Passman added while he misses the daily bond with Yarbrough and the rest of his friends at Trinity, not a transfer of schools nor a closing could ever break the special connection.
Passman scored 10 points Tuesday.
“I know every single one of these guys I’m playing against,” he said. “It makes me feel comfortable to know how they play.”
Yarbrough thinks the same.
“We were talking a little trash out there,” he said. “I knew all of his moves and everything he was going to do.
“It was a good feeling, especially that we got the win.”

Baylee Graning added 15 points, while Hailey Ellis had eight and Lessley Dooley added seven for Cathedral.
