Kingston gas service restored after system fails overnight

NATCHEZ — For the second time in five weeks, gas service to approximately 150 Kingston residences failed — this time as outside temperatures dipped into the teens on New Year’s Day.

Adams County District 2 Supervisor David Carter said air lines on the compressor of a new gas delivery system froze overnight, causing the pressure in gas lines to drop to near zero.

Carter said employees from Pinnacle Propane and Mississippi River Gas were on site Monday morning and afternoon thawing out lines, wrapping pipes and installing heat lamps and other devices to prevent future problems.

On Thanksgiving night, gas service failed after a regulator froze on a gas truck parked at the Old Kingston Store.

A gas line extending from Kingston to Cloverdale completely failed earlier in November and was abandoned by America Midstream.

The gas line was built 90 years ago and was expected to last approximately 40 years.

The company arranged for two gas trucks to temporarily provide gas to Kingston customers while the new delivery system from Pinnacle Propane was being installed.

Carter said the new system was put in place two weeks ago and that workers were still making upgrades.

Carter said customers reported losing gas service early Monday morning between 4 and 5:30 a.m.

When the pressure dropped below 20 pounds because of the frozen lines, Carter said the system alerted MRG and Pinnacle Propane about the problem. To thaw out the lines, the system had to be shut down, Carter said.

Gas service returned early afternoon, Carter said. MRG employees were going house to house making sure customers had gas, he said.

“Most everybody is up and running,” Carter said early Monday evening.

Carter said he expected gas service will be back on for all customers Monday night.

Workers also spent the afternoon making preventative measures to the system to prevent any future problems, Carter said.

“Somebody will also stay on the site tonight to make sure there aren’t any additional problems,” Carter said.

The gas tank, compressor and other components are installed on Stinespring Road. Pinnacle Propane provides the gas and Mississippi River Gas owns the distribution system, Carter said.

“It is a system that has been proven in Arizona, Texas and other states,” Carter said. “I don’t foresee us having any additional problems.”

“I think we are good to go.”
