NATCHEZ — An Adams County man was arrested Thursday, three days after he allegedly burglarized a local Dollar General store.
The Adams County Sheriff’s Office reported that Gary Lee Knapp Jr., 45, 12 Sandpiper Road, was identified as the suspect after reviewing surveillance footage.
Deputies responded Monday night to an activated alarm at the store, located at 1236 U.S. 61 South. After the store had closed for the day, an individual who was unknown at the time reportedly smashed the glass of the store’s front door to force entry.
ACSO Maj. Jerry Brown said Knapp attempted to break into an office in the store, but was unsuccessful and left the building without actually stealing anything.
Investigators subsequently received surveillance footage from the store and determined that Knapp was the perpetrator.
Deputies spotted Knapp Thursday at the corner of Seale and Morgantown roads. He was then taken into custody without incident and transported to the Adams County Jail, the sheriff’s office reported.
Brown said Knapp had a serious medical condition, permitting Knapp to be released from jail on a $5,000 medical recognizance bond.
Later Friday, Knapp was also charged Thursday by the Natchez Police Department for unrelated incidents of shoplifting and trespassing.
Natchez Police Capt. Scott Frye said Knapp was being held at the Natchez City Jail despite his medical condition.
