RAYMOND — Cathedral High School saw its season come to an end Friday night in the first round of the MAIS Class AAA State Playoffs as the Green Wave lost to the Central Hinds Academy Cougars 34-14.
Cathedral, the No. 10 seed, battled with Central Hinds (8-3), the No. 7 seed, for three quarters. But a couple of fourth-quarter touchdowns allowed the Cougars to pull away and keep their season going.
“We battled. We went back and forth with them in the first half. We were down just seven after three quarters. We made some stops,” Green Wave head coach Chuck Darbonne said. “They scored twice at the end. We lost field position because of turnovers.”
The Cougars led the Green Wave 13-7 after one quarter of play and 21-14 at halftime. Neither team was able to score in the third quarter. Central Hinds had 305 total yards of offense — all on the ground. The Cougars did not attempt a single pass.
“We were one or two big plays away from tying it. I’m proud of the way the kids played until the end,” Darbonne said. “Central Hinds played hard. They made a couple of more plays than we did.”
Greg Moore led the Green Wave in rushing with 68 yards on 14 carries. Unfortunately, he fumbled twice and lost both of them. J.t. Taylor went 6-for-14 passing for 64 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.
Cathedral finished its season with a 5-6 overall record.
