BILOXI (AP) — The National Weather Service on Thursday morning upgraded Tropical Depression 16 to Tropical Storm Nate.

The storm’s prediction cone was updated Thursday at 4 a.m. It shows the storm has shifted to the west and Mississippi could be directly impacted, with a potential landfall sometime Sunday afternoon.

Nate is moving through the Carribbean at about 8 mph and the center of the storm should move across northeastern Nicaragua and eastern Honduras sometime Thursday and then over the northwestern Caribbean Sea on Thursday night and Friday.

The center is expected to approach the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula late Friday. Maximum sustained winds are near 40 mph with higher gusts.

Nate is likely to strengthen over the northwestern Caribbean Sea on Thursday night and Friday.

The storm is headed toward the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico on the way to the northern Gulf Coast. It is predicted to become a Category 1 hurricane and it could impact anywhere from Florida to Louisiana.
