Cathedral Green Wave ready for homecoming

Cathedral High School has dropped its past two games, but coach Chuck Darbonne knows his team still has a drive to win.

“It’s not like anything has changed,” he said. “We lost a little confidence so we are trying to get that back.”

The Green Wave (4-2) began its season winning its first four games and is looking to rebound at 7 p.m. tonight when it hosts Central Hinds Academy for its homecoming game.

“We have to find the things we were doing well earlier in the season,” Darbonne said. “It was a goal this week, and we think we accomplished that in practice. I hope it translates to the game.”

Last week, Cathedral fell to Copiah Academy, 43-6. For tonight, Darbonne said his team has worked steadily on improving its physicality.

“The only focus was to get better this week,” he said. “We have done a lot to improve the tackles and blocks — finishing. It’s stuff we have been doing over the course of the year, but we are really putting emphasis on it this week to let them know how important it really is.”

Leading the way for Cathedral up front this season are seniors Cedric Dunbar, Henry Carpenter and Jason Rodgers. Darbonne said sophomore Christopher Johnson has also made significant improvements.

“We are counting on them to do the work for us,” he said. “The three seniors carry the torch for us, and Christopher has gained some good experience and is playing like an upperclassmen. They set the tone for the rest of us.”

While the Green Wave has focused on being physical, Darbonne said Central Hinds (3-3) also heavily relies on its size.

“They have beaten a couple of big schools. They are physical and old school, and they are good at it,” he said. “It’s just tough kids on both sides of the ball.”

With homecoming festivities throughout the week, Darbonne said he hopes the Green Wave can eliminate distractions.

“Hopefully we can stay focused,” he said.
