NATCHEZ — The owner of the dump truck that collapsed the Artman Road bridge has agreed to pay for repairs.

The estimated cost to drive the pilings on the Artman Road bridge is $58,933.48.

District 5 Supervisor Calvin Butler said Road Manager Robbie Dollar is still attempting to gather materials for the deck work, so he did not have an estimate on the other scope of the work. However, Butler said some deck materials would be on hand from the old Deerfield Road bridge.

Artman Road bridge is one of two county bridges expected to receive work in the next week — the other being the Quitman Road bridge.

The Quitman Road contractor, CW&W of Sibley, La., plans to drive the pilings on the Artman Road bridge while they are in town to drive the pilings on the Quitman bridge.

In late August, sheriff’s deputies found a Lloyd Songe Marine Inc. dump drunk in the creek bed after the bridge apparently collapsed under the truck, which weighted perhaps 50,000 pounds. The bridge, with a posted weight limit of 8,000 pounds, had been reopened in 2014 after being shut down for four years.

Butler said Songe is cooperating to the fullest and plans to pay to make the bridge whole. Lloyd Songe Marine is based out of Houma, La.

“He wants to make sure we get it back up and going,” Butler said. “He is willing to get it done.”

The estimated cost for the Quitman Road bridge, including the deck work Dollar’s crew plans to perform, is $67,000.

Quitman Road bridge was one of three county bridges that were closed by the state earlier this summer. The other two bridges were on Deerfield Road and Hutchins Landing Road.

The new $1.6 million state-aid bridge on Deerfield Road has since been opened.

The board has elected to not repair the Hutchins Landing Road bridge, as the bridge is expected to be the county’s next to receive state aid in the coming years. Board President Mike Lazarus has said a temporary fix would cost approximately $200,000.
